Lately we've been looking at a lot of huge cars here, so today let's switch it up with a classic Mini. This one's a Cooper S from the late '60s. I didn't spend a whole lot of time shooting it, so I don't know much about it. From what I can see in the pictures, this Cooper has been customized quite a bit with a roll bar, fender flares, different wheels and an aftermarket grille. The yellow-tinted headlamps give it a French-market appearance. If the taillight design, script badging and rear window shape are any indication, I think this is a 1967 car, an early Mark II. Mini fans, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
I have to hand it to the owner for picking a custom wheel that isn't a Minilite or knock-off of a Minilite. The eight-spoke slotted design is kind of interesting, though I can't identify the maker. Likewise, the monochromatic yellow color stands out from most other Minis. Apart from that, what can I say? It's a classic Mini and those are always welcome in my viewfinder. You'll be seeing more of them in the future.
I would guess this is a bit of a Johnny Cash Lunch Box car the grill looks standard for an older up to '67 Mini Mk1 but the rest of the car looks like a post '67 Mk II, square rear lights and exterior door hinges, the after market arches could be post '84 Mini Mk V.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a Mk2. The Mk 1 had a much smaller rear window and tail lights, and the Mk3 had hidden door hinges and winding windows. Both very difficult features to change. The grille is not original.

DeleteDefinitely a MK2, but not a cooper. A cooper would have:
ReplyDelete-Special badges on the hood.
-No fender flares.
-Stock Mini hubcaps.
-No roll cage.
Most of these things could be removed or changed, but a stock Cooper S is worth enough that it wouldn't be economical to do so.
It should have tipped me off that the "Austin Cooper S" badging on the rear is off-center, mounted too far to the right side. Thanks for the information.
DeleteCrazy. The car is still there. Seen it about a month ago. Although the rear boot lip has been smashed in by someone parking too close in their regular size car. Ugh.
